Those who are interested in learning violin usually hire a private tutor or enroll in violin classes, but for a lesser cost, people can now turn to books, videos and tutorials online. As one of the most sophisticated musical instruments, learning to play the violin takes a lot of practice and dedication. Here are some violin basics you would like to know.

It all starts with finding a good instrument. A higher price doesn’t necessarily equate to a superior violin. The basic things to check are the sound quality, size and arching, condition, and whether it’s hand made. It’s very important to check the size and arching of a violin so that it will fit you, or you most definitely would suffer after some time of playing. Find a decent bow as well, since this also affects the sound quality. It’s hard for beginners to choose a violin all by yourself, so remember to consult an experienced player/tutor to help you make up your mind.

It would be good if you can afford a private teacher for violin lessons, but most of the times you have to find a way to fit your schedule and budget, which means private tutor is definitely not for everyone. In this case, online violin lessons is not a bad choice at all.

Having a regular and productive practice session is crucial in becoming a good violin player. Designate a specific time and place for violin practice. Find a quiet location where there won’t be too many distractions so it’d be easier to concentrate. Bring all the necessary items such as music sheets, a music stand and a pencil for noting down difficult parts to work on. Set a goal for every session. And always remember: quality over quantity, it doesn’t matter how much time you spend on practicing if nothing gets accomplished. Tune your violin correctly, or you won’t make any progress at all! And you might need an electronic tuner for this.

Sometimes you will feel frustrated and you may even want to quit, but please always remember, “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard everyone would do it. It’s the hard that makes it great!” Believe me, your hard work will finally be rewarded!
